April 8, 2017Recruiting profile featuring Xavier Thomas, the No. 1 prospect in the inaugural CI 25 recruiting rankings.
CI 25 Overall Ranking: No. 1
CI 25 Position Ranking: No. 1
Hometown: Florence, South Carolina
School: IMG Academy
Position: DE
Height: 6’3″

Your offense is immediately at a disadvantage when Xavier Thomas is lining up on the other side of the ball. He’s an athletic freak of nature with a history of playing linebacker and body built to play in the trenches. He fires off the ball and sheds blocks easily with active hands. He’ll get to the quarterback, then wrap and roll to finish the play.
Seldom does Thomas give up on a play, and he’s consistent in stopping the run. He has a great motor and can hit running backs like a ton of bricks. He’ll be an instant-impact player no matter where he goes.
“Thomas is a force at defensive end. He has an explosive first step and is extremely athletic. Thomas plays fast, but under control. He has a high football I.Q. and does a great job of putting himself in position to make plays.” – Scout

However, Thomas made it very clear he wanted to spend his college football career close to his hometown of Florence, South Carolina. That left Clemson and South Carolina as the two teams that make the most sense. Years ago, we saw the Gamecocks lure Jadeveon Clowney away from the Tigers. However, with Clemson coming off of a national championship, Dabo Swinney’s staff was able to get the job done and secure a commitment from Thomas eight months sooner than he initially planned to commit.
