If Wyoming is going to shed its title as the most disappointing Mountain West team of the opening month, it’ll have to begin doing so clear across the country in North Carolina. The Cowboys hoped to be more competitive in Craig Bohl’s second season. Instead, a winless start has included losses to North Dakota, Eastern Michigan and New Mexico. Appalachian State has sandwiched 49-0 blankings of Howard and Old Dominion around a loss to Clemson.
Don’t blame the Cowboy offense for the dreary start to the year. The overall numbers aren’t stellar, in part because the defense is on the field too long. However, the backfield composition of Cameron Coffman under center and Brian Hill and Shaun Wick taking handoffs is good enough to break into the win column.
When the Mountaineers were supposed to win last month, they dominated. Appalachian State has pitched two shutouts, thanks to standouts like DE Ronald Blair, LB John Law and FS Doug Middleton. And the offense can move the chains with either QB Taylor Lamb or RB Marcus Cox.
A Wyoming O-line that’s already allowed 11 sacks of Coffman will have a hard time slowing down an assertive Mountaineer front seven, especially Blair. Coffman has a live arm, throwing for 366 yards and four scores a week ago, but he’ll also make costly mistakes when defenses force him to operate under pressure.
Rough spot here for Wyoming. Desperate, overmatched and far from home. Appalachian State is the better team in all phases, the ingredients for another lopsided Mountaineer victory in the final tune-up before Sun Belt Conference play begins.
