Who doesn’t want to play football for Ole Miss!
Disbelieving SEC fans just dying to see Ole Miss fry after coming up with a few shockingly fantastic recruiting classes are desperately hoping the NCAA has something juicy. The NCAA finding recruiting violations at an SEC school might be like handing out a speeding ticket at the Indy 500, but breaking the law is still breaking the law.
But the NCAA doesn’t seem like it’s going to hit Ole Miss with anything big that happened under Hugh Freeze’s watch.
The NCAA is investigating the Ole Miss athletic department on several levels and for a few different sports, not just football, but all anyone wants to really know is this: Did Ole Miss break rules under Freeze to get that epic 2013 class and is there any smoking gun to any of the allegations and innuendo?
The short answer? Nope.
According to a story from the AP, the football program is responsible for 13 of the 28 violations the NCAA has hit the school with including nine coming under Freeze’s reign. But don’t expect anything all that juicy for the average fan, mainly because none of the alleged violations being thrown at Freeze during his time are any big deal.
The Laremy Tunsil incident and suspension for taking stuff he shouldn’t have is water under the bridge. It was reported by the school and doesn’t make a difference now, and there was a no-no involving former assistant coach David Saunders, who got in trouble during his time at Louisiana-Lafayette and was later a part of the Ole Miss world, but 1) that was under the staff before Freeze, and 2) zzzzzzzzzz.
There were a few contacts with recruits during a time when they weren’t supposed to be contacted, but that’s par for the recruiting course – the Ole Miss holding call just so happened to be seen.
Sorry, SEC West fans. Whatever you’re hoping for out of all this, you’re not going to get it.
