Will Muschamp’s South Carolina Press Conference Quotes: ‘Ceiling Is Limitless’

Will Muschamp's South Carolina press conference quotes roundup. Here's what he said about being hired as the Gamecocks' new head coach.

    December 7, 2015

Will Muschamp was introduced as South Carolina’s new head coach during a Monday morning press conference. After spending four years at the University of Florida, Muschamp joined Gus Malzahn’s staff at Auburn this past season as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.

Muschamp’s time with Florida didn’t go as well as he hoped with a 28-21 record, a bowl record of 1-1, and an offense that couldn’t muster much of anything during his tenure in Gainesville, Fla.

But the Gamecocks seem to be following a trend by hiring former Florida head coaches. Steve Spurrier spent 12 seasons at Florida and 11 seasons with South Carolina. He’s the all-time winningest coach in Gamecocks history at 86-49.

Now it’s Muschamp’s turn to see what he can do. Here are some quotes from Muschamp’s press conference.

    On conversation with Ray Tanner

“I made it very evident in the conversation that we had that this is where I wanted to be.”

    On Steve Spurrier

“Coach Spurrier raised the expectation level here and we’re going to continue pushing that.”

    On hiring a staff

“No, when I know, I won’t wait for the entire staff obviously. … You’ll know as quick as I know.”

    On his sideline actions

“I think absolutely there’s a huge difference in being a head coach and defensive coordinator (as far as demeanor).”

On this past season with Auburn

“I regret a 6-6 season. … I think we made tremendous improvements as the year went.”

    On Auburn’s players

“I hate that fact that those kids have to go through” another change at defensive coordinator.”

On recruiting at South Carolina compared to Florida

“It’s not about winning in February, it’s about winning in the fall.”

    On success

“The ceiling is limitless. We’re about winning championships. I’ve stated that and I believe it.”

On Auburn needing a new DC

“I think there’s some really good football players on that defense. I believe there’s a lot of success to be had. Is it difficult? It certainly is.”

    On other job vacancies

“I had some other schools reach out as a possible head coaching situation that I didn’t pursue, quite frankly. … This certainly was the perfect fit for us.”
