Report: Will Muschamp, Gene Chizik Have Interest In UCF

Will Muschamp and Gene Chizik reportedly have "high interest" in the open UCF head coaching position.

    November 24, 2015

There have been a lot of names thrown around for the UCF head coaching job since George O’Leary announced his retirement, and rightfully so. When taking all factors into consideration — location, recruiting, university population, etc. — the position is one of the most desirable outside of the Power 5.

That much can be seen by the latest two coaches who reportedly have their eyes on the job. According to Shannon Green of The Orlando Sentinel, “high interest” has been expressed by Will Muschamp and Gene Chizik.

Muschamp was fired as Florida’s head coach last year. He’s now the defensive coordinator at Auburn.

Chizik, who led Auburn to a national title, was fired by the Tigers in 2012. After a break from the coaching ranks, he was hired by North Carolina prior to the 2015 season as the Tar Heels defensive coordinator, and he has worked wonders with the unit.

While the Xs and Os are important, for a job like UCF, the Jimmys and Joes will take a coach far. There’s enough talent in the state of Florida to go around, and picking up a few recruits overlooked by the Power 5 programs could be the ticket to competing for American Athletic Conference titles on a regular basis.

Both Muschamp and Chizik have experience recruiting at the next level, and both have shined on the defensive side of the ball. But it’s the offensive recruiting and coaching that is still up for debate.

No matter which direction new athletic director Danny White, who happens to be the brother of UF basketball coach Michael White, goes, it’s looking like he’s going to have plenty of candidates to choose from.
