The West Virginia Mountaineers will take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in Phoenix on Jan. 2 in the Cactus Bowl.

The Mountaineers (7-5, 4-5 Big 12) are making their second straight bowl appearance and 34th in program history. West Virginia finished the 2015 regular season hot, winning four of its last five games. The only loss during that stretch was to Kansas State in the final game of the season. The Mountaineers lost their lead in the fourth quarter after Morgan Burns’ 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown put the Wildcats ahead. That touchdown proved to be the game-winner as West Virginia failed to score thereafter. Wendell Smallwood turned in a solid performance carrying the ball 25 times for 141 yards and a touchdown. Skyler Howard struggled to complete passes (19-of-42), but finished with 281 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. West Virginia is looking to get back in the win column in the postseason after losing its last two bowl games.

The Sun Devils (6-6, 4-5 Pac-12) are making their fifth straight bowl appearance and 29th overall. Arizona State was unable to finish its regular season on a high note as it fell to California, 48-46, last time out. The Sun Devils grabbed a 46-45 lead and looked to be in line for the win, but Jared Goff lead the Golden Bears down the field to set up Matt Anderson for the 26-yard game-winning field goal as time expired. Mike Bercovici had a solid day as he passed for 395 yards and four touchdowns. His connection with Devin Lucien was strong. They hooked up eight times for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Demario Richard led the rushing attack with 131 yards on 33 carries, but was unable to find the end zone. Arizona State will look to win its second consecutive bowl game after defeating Duke, 36-31, in last year’s Sun Bowl.

The 2015 Cactus Bowl will be just the second meeting between West Virginia and Arizona State. The Sun Devils took the previous matchup 42-7 back in 1979.

Below is everything you need to know about the matchup, including the Cactus Bowl live stream, TV broadcast information, game notes and prediction.

    Prediction

The Sun Devils are motivated to close 2015 on the winning side of the ledger. With a chance to regroup and exhale, the talent is in place for this program to perform a little closer to its lofty preseason expectations. Bercovici is an upgrade over Howard, so ASU is more likely to deliver balance and diversity on offense. And the Devils’ hard-charging defense will create headaches for an opponent that relies so heavily on the talents of a single player.
