    American football scores, picks recap and quick analysis for each game in Week 5.


    GAMES IN ORDER FROM BEST TO WORST

    UCF vs. Tulane

    Final Score: at Tulane 45, UCF 31
    Pick: Tulane 23, UCF 21
    Line: Pick, o/u: 44

    Tulane came up with five takeaways and suffocated the UCF running game on the way to an impressive win. UCF scored first on an eight-yard Jordan Franks touchdown catch, and then the Green Wave took over with 24 straight points helped by two of Tanner Lee’s four touchdown passes. Down 38-10, UCF’s O came on in the fourth quarter with three D’erren Wilson scoring catches, but it was too late. Tulane came up with seven sacks and held the Knights to -35 rushing yards.

    Player of the Game: Tulane QB Tanner Lee completed 15-of-26 passes for 190 yards and four scores.

    Houston vs. Tulsa

    Final Score: Houston 38, at Tulsa 24
    Pick: Houston 42, Tulsa 30
    Line: Houston -7, o/u: 81

    Houston rolled up 365 rushing yards with Greg Ward Jr. running for 182 of them with three scores and Kenneth Farrow running for 159 with fourth quarter scoring runs from five and 44 yards out. Zach Langer ran for three scores for Tulsa, including a one-yarder late in the third to pull the Golden Hurricane within seven, but it was all Houston in the fourth quarter.

    Player of the Game: Houston QB Greg Ward Jr. completed 22-of-38 passes for 273 yards, and ran 20 times for 182 yards and three scores.

    Miami vs. Cincinnati

    Final Score: at Cincinnati 34, Miami 23

    Line: Miami -6.5, o/u: 68.5

    Cincinnati got a 29-yard Hosey Williams touchdown run and the first of two Hayden Moore touchdown passes for a 14-3 lead, but Miami fought back. The Bearcats took the lead for good in the second quarter on a Moore one-yard run, and closed out the first half on a 26-yard Andrew Gantz field goal for a 27-20 lead. Up four, Moore and the Bearcats answered a Michael Badgley field goal with an 81-yard drive and a seven-yard scoring pass to Tyler Cogswell late in the fourth to put it away.

    Player of the Game: Cincinnati QB Hayden Moore completed 22-of-33 passes for 279 yards and two scores with a pick, and he ran for a score.

    East Carolina vs. SMU

    Final Score: East Carolina 49, at SMU 23

    SMU got out to a 23-7 first half lead with Matt Davis throwing two touchdown passes and Xavier Castille coming up with a trick play catch for a 40-yard score, but James Summers came in for ECU and everything changed. The pirates scored 42 unanswered points with Summers running for two touchdowns and throwing for two more, and Chris Hairston running for a 34-yard touchdown turning the game into a blowout. The Pirate defense clamped down over the final 40 minutes as SMU couldn’t keep the chains moving – the Mustangs converted 2-of-14 third down chances.

    Player of the Game: East Carolina QB James Summers completed 9-of-10 passes for 153 yards and two scores, and he ran nine times for 85 yards and a touchdown.

    Air Force vs. Navy

    Final Score: at Navy 33, Air Force 11
    Pick: Navy 28, Air Force 21
    Line: Navy -5.5, o/u: 52.5

    The Navy defense forced four Air Force turnovers including three fumbles, and the offense did the rest with Chris Swain running for two short scores, Thomas Wilson running for a touchdown, and Keenan Reynolds throwing a 27-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Wilson for a 27-0 lead. Air Force kept fighting, pulling within 16 on a one-yard Karson Roberts run, but the Midshipmen D took care of the rest. Navy closed out the scoring with field goals from Austin Grebe from 37 and 24 yards out.

    Player of the Game: Navy QB Keenan Reynolds completed 4-of-10 passes for 117 yards and a score, and ran 24 times for 183 yards.

    Memphis vs. South Florida

    Final Score: Memphis 24, at South Florida 17
    Pick: Memphis 38, South Florida 24
    Line: Memphis -8.5, o/u: 61.5

    Down 10-0, Memphis rolled out 24 straight points as Paxton Lynch threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. His 55-yard pass play to Doroland Dorceus in the fourth quarter – who took it and rumbled for a score – turned out to be the game-winner. South Florida took the early lead with a one-yard Darius Tice touchdown run and a 31-yard Emilio Nadelman field goal. The offense got back on the board in the final minutes on a 23-yard Elkanah Dillon touchdown catch.

    Player of the Game: Memphis QB Paxton Lynch completed 20-of-33 passes for 305 yards and two scores, and ran for six yards and a score.

    BYU vs. Connecticut

    Final Score: at BYU 30, Connecticut 13
    Pick: BYU 30, Connecticut 13
    Line: BYU -18.5, o/u: 45.5

    It took three quarters, but BYU was finally able to pull away in the fourth with Tanner Magnum hitting Mitch Mathews for touchdown passes from 21 and six yards out and Trevor Samson nailed two field goals to end the fun. UConn made it a 10-10 game on the first of two Bobby Puyol field goals and a 30-yard Arkeel Newsome touchdown catch. The Huskies pulled within seven on a 42-yard Puyol field goal before BYU scored ten unanswered points.

    Player of the Game: BYU QB Tanner Mangum completed 35-of-53 passes for 365 yards and two scores and two interceptions.

    Temple vs. Charlotte

    Final Score: Temple 37, at Charlotte 3
    Pick: Temple 41, Charlotte 3
    Line: Temple -22.5, o/u: 44.5

    Temple got out to a 10-0 lead in the first half on a 39-yard Austin Jones field goal and the first of two Jahad Thomas one yard scoring runs. That’s all the Owls would need. Charlotte got on the board before halftime with a 36-yard Blake Brewer field goal, but the offense couldn’t move the ball and stopped cold in the second half. Temple scored 27 unanswered points with two P.J. Walker touchdown passes for Robby Anderson from 11 and 13 yards out, and helped by a blocked punt for a score.

    Player of the Game: Temple RB Jahad Thomas ran 20 times for 109 yards and two scores, and caught three passes for 48 yards.
