Washington State vs. Portland State prediction and game preview. Can Mike Leach and the Cougars start with a bang?

    September 2, 2015

Mike Leach and the Washington State Cougars host the Portland State Vikings for the first game of the season. Below is the Washington State vs. Portland State prediction and game preview.

Washington State vs. Portland State Prediction & Preview

    Why You Need To Care

After bowling for the first time in a decade in 2013, Washington State regressed last season by winning just three times. As Mike Leach enters his fourth year with the program, the locals are getting antsy, which is putting pressure on the entire staff to turn things around. Portland State has long been the Big Sky’s version of Wazzu, long on passing yards, yet short on victories.

    Why Portland State Will Win

The Vikings are actually showing signs of potential on defense for a change. No, they’re not stout by any means, but Xavier Coleman and Aaron Sibley bring quality and experience to the secondary. And if the Washington State passing game hiccups, the wheels could come off the entire offense.

    Why Washington State Will Win

Leach likes the potential of his offense entering 2015. QB Luke Falk has been sharp this offseason, and he has plenty of experience from 2014. Plus, the Cougars are loaded at receiver and the Joe Dahl-led line welcomes all five of last season’s starters.

    Player Who Matters

As is often the case on the Palouse, Washington State is pining for improvement on defense, especially against the pass. But while the secondary will remain vulnerable, the Cougars can help the cause by moving the pocket more regularly. DE Destiny Vaeao is a senior with the potential to grab scouts’ attention this fall.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Portland State will lack the stoppers to slow down a Washington State passing attack that won’t need much time to get cranking in 2015. Falk will be in midseason form, peppering the overmatched Vikings with darts in the direction of Gabe Marks, Dom Williams and River Cracraft.
