March 9, 2016Wake Forest football spring practice is here. Here are the storylines that matter, what’s the big deal, what to worry about, and what’s all set.
Dave Clawson inherited a very difficult assignment in Winston-Salem. Winning at Wake Forest doesn’t happen without a lot of time and heavy lifting. Clawson, his staff and his kids have painstakingly changed the culture, even if it hasn’t shown in the standings.
The Deacons have won exactly three games in each of the last two seasons, including only a pair in ACC play. Now that the program is a year older, as well as bigger, stronger and faster, the expectation is that a few additional wins will follow. Winning will need to become a habit for a squad that carries a six-game losing streak into 2016.
The front seven. True, there are personnel losses that need to be overcome. There’s also a foundation on which to build. Linemen Zeek Rodney, Wendell Dunn, Josh Banks and especially Duke Ejiofor have yet-to-be-reached ceilings. And Marquel Lee is a senior linebacker with the experience and talent to anchor the middle.
The running game. It’s imperative for the Demon Deacons that the rushing attack start contributing more than it has in the past few seasons. The 2015 edition improved, yet still averaged only three yards per carry. If the line does a better job of opening holes, it’s going to directly impact the production of quarterbacks John Wolford and Kendall Hinton.
