Virginia vs. North Carolina prediction, online live stream and TV broadcast information for Saturday’s game.

The No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers will host the No. 7 UNC Tar Heels in Charlottesville, Va. Saturday in a highly anticipated ACC showdown.

The Cavaliers (21-6, 10-5 ACC) have battled some inconsistency lately having lost two of their last three games, including a 64-61 loss to Miami on Monday night. Miami had a five-point lead at halftime and led the entire second half, but Virginia made it close at the very end. London Perrantes made a layup with six seconds remaining to cut the lead to one and Davon Reed connected on both ensuing free throws for the ‘Canes. Perrantes’ desperation three-point heave misfired and Miami escaped with the victory. Virginia had the edge in the rebounding (35-30) and turnover (9-7) battles, but it sent Miami to the line 20 times, which proved to be the difference. Malcolm Brogdon had a monster game in a losing effort as he led the Hoos with 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting.

The Tar Heels (23-5, 12-3 ACC) have a one-game advantage over the Miami Hurricanes in the ACC standings and are winners of four of their last five games. Last time out, UNC knocked off rival NC State, 80-68, in Raleigh, N.C. The Heels started slow out of the gates and trailed by 13 early, but they managed to grab a five-point lead by halftime. UNC really picked it up in the second frame as it shot 52 percent and its lead grew to as many as 19 as it eased to victory. The Tar Heels had the edge in rebounds (43), were plus-2 in turnovers and shot a better percentage from the field (47.1) than the Wolfpack. Brice Johnson put together his third consecutive double-double as he lead Carolina with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Virginia and UNC will square off for the first time this season and the 182nd overall. The Tar Heels hold a commanding 129-52 advantage in the series and defeated the Cavaliers last time these teams met in the 2015 ACC Tournament. UNC ousted UVA, 71-67, in the semifinals.

    Prediction

The Cavaliers are looking to get back in contention for the ACC crown. Taking down the top dog Saturday would be a good start.

The Hoo Crew will be loud for this one, and the Cavs are nearly unbeatable at home, so expect Virginia to feed off the environment. Look for the Cavs to apply their patented defensive pressure, force turnovers and convert. If UNC gets out to a slow start in this one like it did against NC State, it won’t catch Virginia.

While it’s not an easy task, Tony Bennett and the Cavs need to find a way to slow down Brice Johnson. Expect the Virginia bigs to deny him in the post to limit his opportunities in the paint and on the glass. If they can slow Johnson, the top of the ACC is about to get a little murkier.

Prediction: Virginia 72, North Carolina 70

    Game Notes

    • As of Feb. 25, UVA ranks third nationally in scoring defense (59.7 ppg), seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.56), eighth in field goal shooting (49.4%)

    • Virginia is 33-1 in ACC home games over the past four seasons, tying the best mark in ACC history with one loss (Duke 33-1 from 1962-64).
