The Virginia Tech Hokies will travel to Atlanta to battle the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Thursday night matchup between two ACC Coastal foes.

After dropping two straight games, the Hokies (4-5, 2-3 ACC) got back on the winning track after knocking off Boston College, 26-10, on the road last week. Virginia Tech got off to a 20-0 lead early on the Eagles and never looked back, thanks to a 27-yard touchdown strike from Michael Brewer to Cam Phillips and a 34-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Andrew Motuapuaka. The Hokies received modest performances from Brewer (15-21, 180 yards, TD, INT), Travon McMillian (33 car, 105 yards) and Cam Phillips (6 rec, 87 yards, TD), but it proved to be more than enough. Virginia Tech is looking to continue winning on the Frank Beamer farewell tour and extend its consecutive bowl berth streak to 23.

The Yellow Jackets (3-6, 1-5 ACC) are coming off a disappointing, 27-21 loss to Virginia last week. It appeared that Georgia Tech finally righted the ship after shocking the world by beating Florida State on the final play, but the Jackets couldn’t put it together against the Cavaliers. Down 27-14 in the fourth quarter, Georgia Tech cut the deficit to six on a 22-yard touchdown connection between Justin Thomas and Clinton Lynch. The Yellow Jackets would recover the ensuing onside kick only to turn the ball over on downs to the ‘Hoos and without any timeouts left the game was in hand. Georgia Tech’s option attack was stifled by Virginia, which led Thomas to throw 31 times, the most by a Yellow Jackets QB in the Paul Johnson era.

Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech will meet Thursday for the 13th time, with the Hokies leading the series by an 8-4 count. Virginia Tech has owned Georgia Tech on Thursday nights, posting a 5-0 record in those games.

    Prediction

Can there be 800 passing yards and more than 80 combined points? Be very, very disappointed if this isn’t the most entertaining game of the weekend as Johnson and Terrell put on a show. Between its ability to control the clock, and being far stronger and not screwing up on penalties, Western Michigan will come up with a thriller.
