Villanova vs. Xavier prediction, online live stream and TV broadcast information for Wednesday’s game.

The No. 1 Villanova Wildcats will travel to Cincinnati to take on the No. 5 Xavier Musketeers Wednesday night in what might be the Big East game of the year.

The Wildcats (24-3, 13-1 Big East) remain the best team in the country heading into what appears to be their final test of the regular season. Villanova is riding a seven-game winning streak, including a 77-67 win over Butler Saturday night at home. The Bulldogs wiped away a nine-point deficit in the second half and clung to a two-point lead with 11 minutes to play. That was when the ‘Cats took over. Behind Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins, Villanova put together a 16-6 run to vault itself into the lead and held on the rest of the way. The Wildcats shot better than their opponent from the line (90.5) and from the field overall (46.3) on their way to their 37th consecutive win at The Pavilion. Hart (22 points) and Jenkins (20 points) led Villanova with 20-point efforts and combined for 18 rebounds.

The Musketeers (24-3, 12-3 Big East) are peaking at the right time as they’ve won three straight games and were rewarded with a top-five ranking. Last time out, Xavier made easy work of the Georgetown Hoyas and earned a 88-70 win in Washington D.C. The Musketeers lead was cut to two at halftime, but Xavier came out firing in the second half on a 13-0 run that buried the Hoyas in a hole they couldn’t come back from. The Musketeers shot an impressive 53.8 percent from the field and mind-boggling 93.5 percent from the charity stripe (29-of-31). Edmond Sumner propelled the Xavier offense with 22 points and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. The team also got major contributions from its bench as both James Farr (15 points) and J.P. Macura (12 Points) made the most of their minutes.

Wednesday’s matchup between Villanova and Xavier will be the 27th all-time. The ‘Cats have a 22-4 advantage in the all-time series, and the Musketeers will be seeking revenge after being blown out by Villanova, 95-64, on New Year’s Eve.

    Prediction

This is the one that the conference has been waiting for, the first matchup between two top-five teams in the new Big East, and both programs come in on a roll. Villanova took the conference opener against Xavier easily, but the Musketeers were without top player Edmond Sumner for most of that game. With the addition of Sumner, the noise in the Cintas Center and a chance to knock off the No. 1 team in the nation, this will be a far better matchup.

If Xavier wants to pull the upset it needs to neutralize Josh Hart, who is the key to everything Villanova does. Take him out of the picture, and the Wildcats will stall offensively. If the Musketeers are on their game defensively, control the boards, and get solid production out of their talented backcourt, another No. 1 will fall in 2015-16.

    Prediction: Xavier 85, Villanova 81

    Game Notes

    • Balance has been a key to Villanova success in 2015-16 as evidenced by the fact that all five starters enter tonight’s action averaging double digits in points per game.
    • Xavier is hosting its first No. 1-ranked opponent since the 1999-2000 season, the year before Cintas Center opened.
    • Another strength for the Wildcats in 2015-16 has been found at the defensive end of the floor. Villanova leads the Big East in scoring defense (61.5 ppg) and that work has helped fuel a seven game winning streak.
