    Why You Need To Care

The Wildcats are good … very, very good. They’re 4-0 to start the season and have been winning by an average of 28.8 points per game. Their latest victory came against Akron on Sunday, 75-56.

Stanford will try and give the Wildcats their first loss of the season when they meet in the Barclays Center for the NIT Season Tip-Off. The Cardinal are 2-2 after dropping back-to-back games to SMU and Saint Mary’s.

Villanova is averaging 84.8 points per game while giving up 56 points per game. Stanford, on the other hand, isn’t averaging as big of a spread as the Wildcats. The Cardinal average 79.3 points per game while giving up 77.8 points per game.

    Why Villanova Will Win

The Wildcats are going to be a very tough team to beat as the season goes on. They share the basketball effectively with an average of 19.5 assists per game. Villanova will keep the Stanford on its toes by sharing the basketball and spacing the floor. But the real difference will be made on defense. The Wildcats allow 33.1 percent shooting on the season.

    Why Stanford Will Win

Head coach Johnny Dawkins needs to preach shot selection to his team. Villanova is not a team that will leave the door open, so Stanford needs to focus on high-percentage looks to capitalize on its possesions. Other than that, the Cardinal need to crash the boards. In its first two games, the Cardinal tacked up more than 40 rebounds in each. In the last two games (both losses), Stanford had 45 rebounds combined.

    Players Who Matter

Villanova is going to turn to junior guard Josh Hart to continue dominating. He’s leading the team with 16.5 points per game, and he’s shooting 45.5 percent from three. Plus, he’s averaging 6.8 rebounds per game for good measure. Hart’s play will have a huge impact on the game. But he’ll need senior forward Daniel Ochefu to do his thing in the paint. Ochefu is averaging a double-double (12.3 ppg, 10.8 rpg) and needs to control the interior.

For Stanford, guard Marcus Allen may be the leading scorer with 16 points per game, but there are two other names to focus on in this one. Reid Travis and Rosco Allen are combining for an average of 17.3 points per game, but they’re also accumulating 11.8 rebounds per game for the Cardinal. Traivs and Reid need to do their parts on the glass to help steal a win.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Villanova … Villanova will happen. The Wildcats defense is legitimate. It’ll focus on keeping Allen from getting clean looks at the rim and force someone else to step up for Stanford, but no one will have that stellar of a game for the Cardinal. Villanova will get a solid game from Hart, who will lead the game in scoring and do his part on the boards as well.
