    Why You Need To Care

Both of these teams began the season as hot as can be, winning five games in a row. But both of them saw their winning streaks come to an end on a neutrals-site hardwood.

No. 21 Vanderbilt ran into the basketball giant that is the Kansas Jayhawks, as the Commodores fell 73-60. And the Flyers were smacked in the mouth with a 90-61 loss to Xavier.

Dayton responded by taking down North Florida, 86-71, on Saturday. The Commodores, after a 50-point beating against Detroit, lost on the road against Baylor 69-67.

Vanderbilt’s last home loss came last February, and one would assume it would defend its home court once again. But let’s see if the Flyers can pull out an upset in Nashville, Tenn.

    Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores’ duo of Wade Baldwin and Damian Jones has to supply a big scoring night to secure a win. Baldwin is dropping 15 points per game while Jones is averaging 11.6 points per game. Both are shooting 53 percent or better from the field. Dayton has 105 assists on the year, so Vanderbilt should look to play the pressure the ball handler into tight spots. And when he looks to dish, that’s when you attack the passing lanes and transform turnovers into fast break points. Aside from that, the Commodores have to always keep a hand in Scoochie Smith’s face. He’s hitting on 50 percent of his threes and is someone who can keep Dayton hanging around for longer than Vanderbilt would like.

    Why Dayton Will Win

It was just hit on, but Smith needs to be pistol in Dayton’s holster — ready to fire at any second. If the 6-foot-2 guard gets an open look on the perimeter, he needs to take and bury it. But at the same time, Smith has to do his part and getting open looks for his teammates. Charles Cooke is knocking down 39.3 percent of his triples. If Smith’s sharp shooting draws more attention, that could open up Cooke for some better looks, too. The Flyers have to crash the offensive boards and make something happen. Posting some second-chance points won’t only keep them in the game, but it can stall Vanderbilt’s offense and allow the Flyers to gain momentum.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Dayton should make it close, again, closer than the Commodores would like. Smith and Cooke will deliver from the outside, but Vanderbilt will force some key turnovers at times when the Flyers are aching for a bucket. Baldwin and Jones will combine for an efficient shooting night, and the Commodores will add some much-needed points from the free throw line to help pad their lead. The one should be competitive through the second half, but Vanderbilt will defend its home court and improve to 7-2.
