Utah vs. Fresno State picks for the NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Region first-round game.

The Utah Utes are an interesting team. They’ve played in a surprisingly competitive Pac-12 all year, albeit with mixed results. Against teams from the state of Oregon, the Utes are a lackluster 1-4, including 0-3 against the one-seeded Oregon Ducks. On the flip side, they boast fantastic resume wins over the likes of Duke, Arizona and Cal. Prior to their loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 Tournament, the Utes were on a blistering nine-game winning streak. This is a team peaking at the right time.

If there’s one thing that Fresno State must do to win, it’s slow down Jakob Poeltl. Poeltl is a big dude – 7-foot-0, to be precise, and is steadily climbing up the boards in NBA mock drafts. He’s a threat for a double-double in every game, and can stretch the game beyond the paint if needed. The Bulldogs need to either play big or get hot from the outside.

Here are the Campus Insiders’ Utah vs. Fresno State picks.

    Utah vs. Fresno State Picks

    Pete Fiutak

This might be one of the more underappreciated teams in the tournament – at least by the average bracket-guesser. The Utes will get by Fresno State without a problem, and they’ll lose to Gonzaga in the second round, but it would be fun to see what they could do against Michigan State.

    Ray Crawford

Marvelle Harris leads the Bulldogs to a 10th straight win in an upset of Utah before bow-wow-wowing out of the tournament.

    Shae Peppler

I’ll say it again, the Pac 12 is the most underrated conference this college hoops season. Jakob Poeltl will help the Utes dominate in the paint and beat Fresno State.

    Ken Bikoff

Jakob Poeltl is a big who makes a difference, and Fresno State won’t have an answer inside.

    Jordan Cornette

Utah’s 7-footer, Jakob Poeltl, will present too much of a problem for Fresno State. Utes get by.
