The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will battle the South Florida Bulls in Marlins Park on Dec. 21 for the Miami Beach Bowl.

The Bulls (8-4, 6-2 AAC) will appear in their first bowl game since 2010 and seventh overall. Last time out, South Florida defeated in-state rival UCF, 44-3, and secured its sixth AAC win, setting a new program record for conference wins. The Knights grabbed an early lead by tacking on a field goal, but that is all they would get as the Bulls scored 44 unanswered. Quinton Flowers was South Florida’s entire offense as he amassed 263 yards and had all five of the Bulls touchdowns on the day before sitting out the entire fourth quarter. Marlon Mack did his best to help Flowers, rushing 18 times for 102 yards — his fourth straight game in which he has topped 100 yards. The Bulls defense did its job, holding the 0-12 Knights to just 203 yards of total offense and a 2-of-12 conversion rate on third down.

The Hilltoppers (11-2, 8-0 C-USA) are making their fifth consecutive bowl appearance, which is the longest active streak in Conference USA. Western Kentucky is looking to build on the momentum of their first conference championship at the FBS level as the Hilltoppers beat Southern Miss, 45-28, to claim the title. The Hilltoppers staged a comeback in the first half, scoring two quick touchdowns right before halftime to tie the game at 21. The Eagles would strike first with a touchdown in the second half, but Western Kentucky’s offense exploded, scoring 24-unanswered points to finish the game. His pick-six aside, Brandon Doughty put together another spectacular passing performance hitting on 34 of 52 passes for 410 yards with three touchdowns and rushing for another. Taywan Taylor led the Hilltoppers receiving corps with eight receptions for 165 yards and a pair of scores, while D’Andre Ferby (21 car, 57 yards) punched in a pair of touchdowns on the ground for Western Kentucky.

The Miami Beach Bowl will mark the seventh time that Western Kentucky and USF will face off. The Bulls hold a 4-2 edge in the series and have won four straight games over the Hilltoppers.

    Prediction

The Toppers are streaking, but so are the Bulls who’ve won seven of their last eight games. And USF is getting it done on both sides of the ball. No, it won’t completely shut down Doughty and his troops. Few do. However, the Bulls will reduce Western Kentucky’s number of possessions and explosive plays with a combination of the ground game and a defense that flies to the ball. A season-capping bowl win could be the first step to competing for an American title and a Big Six bowl game in 2016.
