December 28, 2015The No. 25 USC Trojans will square off against the Wisconsin Badgers in San Diego on Dec. 30 in the Holiday Bowl.
The Trojans (8-5, 6-3 Pac-12) are making their fourth consecutive bowl appearance and 50th overall. USC rebounded from a shocking, 3-3 start to win five of its last seven games. Their regular season finished on a sour note as the Trojans fell 41-22 to the Stanford Cardinal in the Pac-12 title game. USC fought hard, taking a 16-13 lead in the third quarter, but Stanford proved too good, outscoring the Trojans 28-6 to close out the game and win the conference title. Cody Kessler did what he could as he hit on 22-of-37 pass attempts for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Ronald Jones (6 car, 50 yards, TD) had the only other score for the Trojans as he and Justin Davis (17 car, 99 yards) led the USC rushing attack. The defense could not stop Heisman runner-up Christian McCaffrey, who amassed a school-record 461 all-purpose yards and three total scores, which included a touchdown pass. The Trojans are looking for their third straight bowl win after victories over Fresno State in the 2013 Las Vegas Bowl and Nebraska in last year’s Holiday Bowl.
The Badgers (9-3, 6-2 Big Ten) are making their 14th consecutive bowl appearance, a run that is the longest in the Big Ten and seventh longest in the nation. Wisconsin finished off the 2015 season hot, winning six of its last seven games, including a 31-21 victory over Minnesota last time out. The Badgers and Golden Gophers were locked at seven after the first quarter, but Wisconsin outscored its opponent 24-7 over the second and third quarters to cruise to their 12th straight victory over Minnesota. The Badgers offense was run primarily through Dare Ogunbowale and Taiwan Deal, who combined for 55 rushes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. While Wisconsin’s rushing attack thrived, Minnesota’s did not as the Badgers defense held the Gophers to just 53 yards on the ground, which led to 37 pass attempts and three interceptions for Mitch Leidner. The Badgers are looking for their second consecutive bowl win as Wisconsin snapped a four-game postseason losing skid with a 34-31 victory over Auburn in last year’s Outback Bowl.
The 2015 Holiday Bowl will mark the seventh time USC and Wisconsin have met. The Badgers are looking for their first win in the series as the Trojans have taken all six previous meetings.
Below is everything you need to know about the matchup, including the Holiday Bowl live stream, TV broadcast information, game notes and prediction.
USC has the flash and the talent, and it’s going to come into the game looking to make a big statement. It won’t matter. The Wisconsin defense is the real deal and will keep the game just close enough so much-maligned quarterback Joel Stave can finish it off in the fourth quarter. The Badger running game won’t be there, but in a close, tight battle, the defense will get it done when needed.
