U.S. Army All-American Bowl Recap: 4-Star QB Hunter Johnson Named MVP

Four-star quarterback Hunter Johnson shined in the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and walked away with the game’s MVP award.
On Saturday, another successful edition of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl was completed when the East Team beat the West Team, 27-17.
The MVP award of the game went to 4-star Clemson commit Hunter Johnson, the nation’s No. 5 quarterback and No. 61 overall player. Johnson only completed 3-of-10 passes for 91 yards, but 61 of those yards came on a touchdown strike to 4-star wide receiver Henry Ruggs III. That was the first score of the game and put the East Team up on the board.
About five minutes later in the game, it was 5-star Georgia commit Jake Fromm’s turn to shine. Fromm, the No. 3 quarterback and No. 29 overall player, showed great poise and pocket presence when he stepped up and laid in a beautiful pass to 4-star Florida State commit D.J. Matthews, who was streaking down the sideline.
Fromm connected on 4-of-7 throws for 89 yards. Matthews and Ruggs combined for 155 yards on three catches.
The West Team didn’t crack its way into the end zone until 5-star Ohio State QB commit Tate Martell pulled the ball down and snuck in from 18 yards out.
After 5-star running back Cam Akers, another FSU commit, picked up a 4-yard touchdown, Martell’s high school teammate, Bubba Bolden, showed off his best Kam Chancellor impression. Bolden, who re-committed to USC during the game, leaped over the offensive line to block a field goal attempt. He then scooped up the loose ball and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown.
Alabama quarterback commit Tua Tagovailoa looked particularly smooth within the pocket and outside of it. He completed all three of his passes for 36 yards but also ran for 27 yards on seven carries.
UCLA commit Jaelan Phillips had to be happy that 5-star cornerback Darnay Holmes chose the Bruins, but the former made UCLA fans happy by totaling five tackles and a quarterback hit.
Northwestern commit Earnest Brown recorded the game’s only sack, and Oklahoma linebacker commit Jacob Phillips was all over the field while laying a couple of big hits on 5-star running back Najee Harris.
Speaking of Harris, he picked up 22 yards on only eight carries. We’ll now wait to see whether the nation’s No. 1 overall player will stick to his Alabama commitment or flip to Michigan.
