Urban Meyer responds to Kentucky signee Landon Young’s comments about being mistreated by Ohio State.

Last week, four-star Kentucky signee Landon Young made headlines during an interview with SEC Country. Young shared a story of his recruitment with Ohio State and head coach Urban Meyer, painting the Buckeyes and Meyer in a negative light.

Young said Ohio State “treated me like a piece of meat, just treated me like crap,” and that out of all the coaches he crossed paths with, Meyer was the least nice. He also said that Meyer called him an “insubstantial player” and Kentucky an “insubstantial school.”

On Tuesday, Meyer got his chance to respond when a reporter asked if he had seen what Young said.

“Sure I can, they’re (recruits) signed” Meyer said adamantly in regards to being allowed to comment on the former recruit.

“I did read (Young’s comments). We had a lot of respect for him as a player – a lot. I was very disappointed in our staff that we didn’t offer him earlier.

“About treating him bad, we don’t do that on purpose. If that’s his feelings … I went back and talked to our staff about that because we don’t want that out there. But when you have one out of 650 that say that someone was treated bad, you know. I know we did not offer him early. Afterwards, he really grew into a great player and we missed on him early on. I was very upset with our coaching staff, the recruiter in the area and then the position coach. That’s the way we do our business here. Yeah, we do address that, I don’t want that out there.”

In addition to Ohio State, Young, the nation’s No. 219 overall player and No. 18 offensive tackle, also held offers from Alabama, Auburn and Miami – to name a few. He made the choice to play for his hometown team rather than leave the state for one of college football’s powers.
