Urban Meyer Chasing Down Record For Most Wins In First 15 Seasons

Urban Meyer is chasing down the record for most wins in first 15 seasons for a head coach, which, given Ohio State's level of play, he'll likely get.

    October 14, 2016

Urban Meyer is chasing down the record for most wins in first 15 seasons for a head coach.

The success Urban Meyer has had in his head coaching career is no secret. In just 15 years as the general, Meyer has held four head coaching gigs – Bowling Green (’01-’02), Utah (’03-’04), Florida (’05-10) and Ohio State (12-present) – and won three national championships – UF (06, 08) and OSU (14).

He has a winning percentage of 85.4, and has only won less than nine games in two seasons – his first with Bowling Green (8-3) and last with Florida (8-5). He’s reached double-digit victories in nine seasons, and registered at least 12 Ws in eight.

Racking up these wins at a record pace has put him in line to become the winningest college football head coach through his first 15 seasons. Meyer needs just one win to tie Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops at 160 victories, and two to surpass him. He’s already passed legendary head coaches Barry Switzer, who coached Oklahoma from 1973-88, and Tom Osborne, who was at Nebraska from 1973-97.

Meyer currently sits at 159 wins, and unless the bottom completely falls out of Ohio State’s season, one that finds the team undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll, it’s highly likely that he’ll pick up the two needed to pass Stoops.
