Updated Heisman odds have been released, and the list of favorites is dominated by some usual suspects.
Spring practices may just be getting under way, but it’s never too early to start thinking about postseason awards. Yeah yeah, December is a billion light years away, but why not start fantasizing about who will win the 2016 Heisman Trophy. After all, healthy debate is half of what carries us through the offseason.
When looking at the updated favorites list and odds for the Heisman, there are few surprises. Both Deshaun Watson and Christian McCaffrey are expected to make it back to New York, as is Leonard Fournette – a man who sat atop the watchlist for much of last offseason and well into the fall.
Let’s take a look at the latest round of preseason Heisman odds with a snapshot of each player.
- Deshaun Watson (5/1)– No surprise here, considering he attended the ceremony last year. He’ll have an early chance to prove himself with the Week 1 game against Auburn in Jordan-Hare.
- Leonard Fournette (6/1) – Another no-brainer here. Buga Nation was the runaway favorite last year until he was stonewalled against Alabama. Another down week afterward, and it was curtains. His ridiculous bowl game against Texas Tech reminded the world just how dominant Fournette can be.
- Christian McCaffrey (6/1) – Like Watson, a given. McCaffrey was last year’s Heisman runner-up and should continue putting up video game numbers in the Pac-12. If Stanford can stay atop the league, he’ll get the well-deserved publicity.
- Baker Mayfield (10/1) – Oklahoma is a trendy pick to win the national championship this season. Mayfield certainly has the right offense and coach to help pick up the hardware, though some of his votes might be vultured by teammate Samaje Perine
- Dalvin Cook (12/1) – One of the best odds on the board. You can basically pencil Cook in for one 50+ yard run every game. Add in that Florida State figures to be back in the title hunt after a “down year” and Cook’s highlight reel will be on a loop every Saturday night on SportsCenter.
- Seth Russell (12/1) – He quarterbacks for Baylor. Of course he’s gonna throw for like a million yards and 800 touchdowns.
- J.T. Barrett (15/1) – The odds seem kinda low, no? Urban Meyer pretty much cost Ezekiel Elliott the Heisman Trophy during the loss to Michigan State last year, so you have to figure he’s going to scheme to make Barrett look like a shiny choice.
- Nick Chubb (15/1) – Great redemption story if he comes back 100% healthy following a horrific knee injury.
- Chad Kelly (20/1) – We’ll know by the end of September, given Ole Miss plays Florida State, Alabama and Georgia all before the calendar flips to October.
- DeShone Kizer (20/1) – Any Notre Dame quarterback who can keep the Fighting Irish in the championship will be a hot item. Great early performances against Texas and Michigan State can shoot him to the top of the heap. There’s also the little part about needing to beat out Malik Zaire for the position.
- Josh Rosen (20/1) – Rosen was electric out of the gate in his freshman season. With a year under the belt, he could turn some heads should UCLA pace the Pac-12 South. Rosen vs. McCaffrey on September 24 is must-watch television.
