UNLV and Nevada are set for the 41st chapter of their instate rivalry, with the Fremont Cannon hanging in the balance. The Pack has dominated the series over the past decade, winning nine times. But Brian Polian’s team failed to impress in September, narrowly escaping Buffalo last weekend. The Rebels crushed Idaho State, 80-8, in Week 4 to capture their first win of 2015.
The Rebels are nothing if not confident right now after rushing for 517 yards and six scores in a record-setting win. Yeah, it was Idaho State, but UNLV needed its spirit lifted following losses to Northern Illinois, UCLA and Michigan. The D has 10 takeaways, unsettling for QB Tyler Stewart and a wonky Nevada pass attack.
The Rebels are yielding more than five yards a carry. The Pack is norming more than five yards on the ground. Nevada should be able to run the ball on UNLV with Don Jackson and James Butler, who are both on pace for 1,000-yard seasons.
When UNLV has the ball, the team is liable to be trucked at the line of scrimmage. Prior to the Idaho State game, the Rebels were getting mauled in the trenches. And while Nevada isn’t Michigan or UCLA, UNLV will still have its hands full trying to contain the talented and veteran Pack D-line of Ian Seau, Salesa Faraimo, Rykeem Yates and Lenny Jones.
New head coach Tony Sanchez has UNLV playing with more confidence and enthusiasm in 2015. But Nevada has been in the Rebels’ heads over the past 10 years. And as long as the Pack can run the ball and consistently win at the line of scrimmage, the Fremont Cannon will remain in Reno.
