UGA head coach Kirby Smart offered nine scholarships to players at St. Thomas Aquinas High School.
March 10, 2016UGA head coach Kirby Smart recently offered nine scholarships to players at St. Thomas Aquinas High School.
Even with all of the headlines Jim Harbaugh has been making lately — whether opining on a cute political agenda or going after the country’s top recruits — there’s another name making big waves in college football: Kirby Smart.
The new UGA head coach flat-out dropped the mic on the recruiting trail Wednesday when he extended nine scholarships to players at one high school, according to 247Sports — yes, you read that correctly: nine scholarships.
St. Thomas Aquinas High School, one of the nation’s powerhouse high school football programs in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., may soon become a secondary “Dawg house.”

In the entire time Mark Richt was leading the Bulldogs (15 seasons), he only signed one recruit from St. Thomas Aquinas: Geno Atkins.
This is the same school that produced the likes of Michael Irvin, Atkins, Giovani Bernard and, more recently, Joey Bosa.
Smart is basically planting a black and red flag at St. Thomas Aquinas and telling UGA rivals, “You shall not pass.”
Seriously, would it be much of a surprise if the Bulldogs started to offer academic scholarships to the team managers and athletic training students at St. Thomas Aquinas? At this point, that’s the path it looks like we’re headed down.
Attempting to lock down a premier school, in his predecessor’s new backyard no less, is a bold strategy. Let’s see how it works out for the Bulldogs and Smart.
