The UGA football schedule for 2017 has been released. We rank the toughest games and stretch the Bulldogs will face next season.
September 14, 2016The UGA football schedule for 2017 has been released. We rank the toughest games and stretch the Bulldogs face next season.
The Georgia Bulldogs are thrown right into the fire to start 2017. The Bulldogs welcome giant-killer Appalachian State to Athens on Sept. 2, then travel north to face Notre Dame in a highly-anticipated matchup.
The Bulldogs’ road schedule has several landmines, including the aforementioned game against the Fighting Irish, at Tennessee, the neutral-site contest against Florida, at Auburn and at Georgia Tech.
From the SEC West, UGA swaps Ole Miss for the Rebels’ Egg Bowl rivals, Mississippi State. The Bulldogs also have the annual rivalry with Auburn, this year on The Plains.
Sept. 2 – Appalachian State
Sept. 9 – at Notre Dame
Sept. 16 – Samford
Sept. 23 – Mississippi State
Sept. 30 – at Tennessee
Oct. 7 – at Vanderbilt
Oct. 14 – Missouri
Oct. 21 – Bye
Oct. 28 – vs. Florida (Jacksonville)
Nov. 4 – South Carolina
Nov. 11 – at Auburn
Nov. 18 – Kentucky
Nov. 25 – at Georgia Tech
Oct. 28 – Nov. 11
There’s nothing easy about a three-game stretch that includes a neutral-site rivalry game against Florida, which the Gators have owned since 1990, and a road rivalry game against Auburn, with a home contest against what will likely be an improved South Carolina team sandwiched in between.
1. vs. Florida (Jacksonville, Florida)
The Bulldogs have won just six games in the past 26 against the Gators, and have only strung two or more consecutive victories together one time since 1990.
2. at Notre Dame
UGA opens with back-to-back games against Appalachian State and at Notre Dame. Typically, teams would have more time to focus on an early-season game of this magnitude, but the Mountaineers are no pushover.
3. Appalachian State
Sure, there are more complete teams and tougher games on paper on UGA’s schedule – at Tennessee and at Auburn to name a couple – but the Mountaineers took the Vols to the wire in the 2016 season-opener and knocked off Michigan in 2007 to open the season. This is a game App State lives for. The Bulldogs can’t afford to be looking ahead to Notre Dame.
Appalachian State
As mentioned above, this sets up as the ultimate trap game. It’s a season-opener, so there will be rust UGA has to wear off, and waiting a week later are the Fighting Irish. The Mountaineers will capitalize if the Dawgs sleep walk even the slightest big.
