Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh lost another member of his staff as running backs coach and standout recruiter Tyrone Wheatley left for a job with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tyrone Wheatley has been a vital part of Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff over the last two seasons, and it was only a matter of time before another team tried to pluck him from Ann Arbor.

That team turned out to be the Jacksonville Jaguars, as it was confirmed late Monday that Wheatley is leaving Michigan to be the running backs coach for the NFL franchise. Wheatley served in that position under Harbaugh and also grew into one of the nation’s best recruiters, with 247Sports ranking him No. 6 on its recruiter rankings.

Wheatley is from suburban Detroit and was a standout running back for the Wolverines from 1991-94, winning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors in 1992. He began his FBS coaching career in 2009 at Eastern Michigan before moving on to Syracuse from 2010-12 under Doug Marrone, then followed Marrone to the Buffalo Bills in 2013 and ’14.

Marrone accepted the Jaguars’ head coaching job last week, and Wheatley could not pass up a chance to rejoin him in the NFL. Wheatley also interviewed for the head coaching job at Western Michigan vacated by P.J. Fleck’s move to Minnesota, but the Broncos hired Purdue quarterbacks coach Tim Lester, who played QB at WMU from 1996-99.

Harbaugh must now find a new running backs coach, and it again might lead to back a former Michigan standout. Mike Hart is the program’s all-time leading rusher and coached running backs at Eastern Michigan from 2012-13 before joining P.J. Fleck’s staff at Western Michigan from 2014-15. He currently holds the same position at Syracuse.

Wheatley’s departure is the second from Harbaugh’s staff this offseason following passing coordinator Jedd Fisch leaving to be the offensive coordinator at UCLA. Harbaugh hired Cleveland Browns assistant Pep Hamilton to replace Fisch.
