March 11, 2016The Tulsa Golden Hurricane has made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.
Team: Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Record: 20-11
Conference: American Athletic Conference
Head coach: Frank Haith
How they got here: At-large bid
The Golden Hurricane doesn’t feature a lot of size, but it brings plenty of balance to the floor and can wear teams out by forcing defenses to scramble. James Woodard is a quality scorer who doesn’t try to do too much on the floor, and he loves to get a little room on the perimeter to squeeze off a three. Shaquille Harrison is the do-everything guard who can score, rebound and pass, but he’s not much of an outside shooter. Pat Birt is the only other consistent scorer, and most of his game comes from the perimeter.
A lack of rebounding and size in the paint will be a huge problem for Tulsa in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Hurricane can fall in love with the three, too, which is a problem since the team simply doesn’t shoot the ball from the perimeter all that well. Turnovers are an Achilles heel, as well.
Tulsa has a nice resume, but this isn’t a team that has built consistent success vs. the best teams in the land. Making it to the second weekend could be a surprise, especially considering the fact the Hurricane haven’t really had many opportunities to punch outside of their weight class this year.
