Trevor Lawrence discussed his top schools and upcoming visits in a recent interview. He's the nation's No. 1 quarterback for 2018.
March 17, 2016Trevor Lawrence, the nation’s top quarterback recruit for 2018, discussed his top schools and upcoming visits in a recent interview.
Trevor Lawrence is the nation’s No. 1 quarterback prospect and No. 2 overall player for the class of 2018. He’s also soon likely to become a household name in the South, given that the highly-touted prospect is making his recruiting rounds throughout Appalachia, the Piedmont and The Swamp.
Among Lawrence’s top three programs sit Clemson and the universities of Georgia and Tennessee. On the outside looking in is the University of Florida.
During a recent interview, the Cartersville, Ga. prospect weighed in on the merits of each of the four programs to whom he’s devoting his recruitment process. Lawrence plans on making a decision by the end of the summer and not carrying any mystery into the following school year.
Here’s a snapshot of each of the recruit’s top four programs:
Lawrence is coming off a trip to Clemson, where he met primarily with quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter. When asked about Death Valley, he responded that it “feels different when you go there. The atmosphere. Everyone is friendly.” Lawrence also said that, “Coach Swinney is different,” with how he reponds to recruits – a description that meshes perfectly with Swinney’s players’ coach reputation.
Clemson runs a spread offense similar to what Lawrence currently helms. However, he says that he’d run less for the Tigers than he currently does.
Lawrence is “impressed” by what Kirby Smart is putting together in Athens. He touts both Smart and Jim Chaney as “good guys” and “good coaches” (see: there’s rapport).
Most importantly for fans of the Bulldogs, when asked which offense he’d thrive the most in, Lawrence answered Georgia. The Dawgs run a pro-style offense that best translates to his game and would help him prepare for the NFL.
On March 26, Lawrence will travel to Knoxville to meet with Tennessee’s coaching staff. The Volunteers were his favorite team growing up (though Lawrence insists that such youthful favortism doesn’t give Tennessee a leg up).
Lawrence specifically points to Tennessee’s facilities and upward trend under Butch Jones as positives for the program. The expectations for the Vols, Lawrence feels, “should be for them to win the East.”
The Gators are currently on the outside looking in, but Jim McElwain and staff will soon have a chance to woo the star quarterback. After visiting with Tennessee, Lawrence’s next recruiting trip will be to Gainesville.
As for what the Gators can do to better position themselves: show “they’re going in the right direction [and have] coaching stability.” Moreover, he’s interested in seeing the atmosphere down at The Swamp.
