Five-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence committed to the Clemson Tigers on Thursday evening. Lawrence is the No. 1 overall player in the 2018 recruiting class.

While some companies were neck-deep at a holiday party open bar, the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit for 2018 was shutting down his recruitment process. On Thursday evening, 5-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence committed to Clemson.

Lawrence offered the following message via social media:

“After a long and thoughtful process, I’m blessed to announce that I am committed to Clemson University #AllIn.”

Prior to his commitment Lawrence had grown weary of the recruitment process, explaining in interviews that the constant politicking of fans for their respective teams was tiresome.

Hailing from Cartersville, Georgia, Lawrence had whittled his list down to four schools: Clemson, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. Ultimately he never seemed to warm to Florida, while his favorite childhood team, Tennessee, seemed to be an imperfect fit – thus leaving home-state UGA and Clemson.

Though Kirby Smart has flexed his muscles when recruiting quarterbacks, there are too many cooks in the kitchen in Athens. Jacob Eason currently runs the Dawgs’ offense, and would still be on roster when Lawrence suited up. Then, waiting in the wings, is Jake Fromm, a 5-star quarterback in the 2017 class. For somebody like Lawrence, who can come in and compete for the starting job from Day 1, there was too much of a backlog of talent.

Prior to his commitment, Lawrence had lauded Clemson’s offense, being fond of Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott’s ability to utilize dual-threat quarterbacks. It goes without saying that landing his commitment is a major coup for Dabo Swinney’s team, and that Lawrence will be the fulcrum of the 2018 class.

Lawrence is the second 2018 commit for Clemson, joining 4-star linebacker Mike Jones Jr. out of IMG Academy.
