Five-star point guard Trae Young scored a career-high 65 points on Friday night. The Oklahoma native eclipsed the 2,500-point mark for his career.

Not long after star UCLA commit LaMelo Ball dropped 92 points in a single game, Trae Young had a memorable performance of his own.

The Norman North (Norman, OK) point guard scored 65 points on Friday night in a 103-67 win over Edmund Memorial (Edmund, OK) despite taking a seat on the bench with more than four minutes left in regulation. In the process, he eclipsed the 2,500-point mark for his career.

Forty of the five-star Young’s points came in the first half.

The 65 points bested the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder’s previous career high of 60 points, which happened last season against Yukon on Feb. 12, 2016. He also beat his own record for the most points scored in Oklahoma 6A history. It was only the 16th time in the state’s history that a boy’s basketball player has scored 60 in a game. Kenneth Johnson of Grandfield holds the Oklahoma single-game record with 105, achieved in January 1979.

The McDonald’s All American, who entered Friday night’s game averaging 42 points per game, scored 44 earlier in the week with Kansas head coach Bill Self in the stands.

Young is considered one of the best overall players in the Class of 2017. He is a very good ball handler with good quickness who both attacks the basket and delivers long-range shots. He can score at a high level but also has very good vision as a passer. He just needs to improve his defensive game.

In-state Oklahoma, Kansas and Kentucky are among the major programs after his services. He is expected to make his college decision on Thursday, Feb. 16 in his high school gym.
