February 16, 2017Oklahoma landed a huge commitment for its 2017 class Thursday, as 5-star point guard and McDonald’s All-American Trae Young chose the Sooners over Kansas and Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas fans waited anxiously for quite some time as Trae Young pondered his college decision. Would the 5-star point guard choose the perennial national contender Jayhawks? Or would he decide to stay in state?
In the end, Young chose to stay right at home.
Young pledged his commitment to the Sooners on Thursday from his high school, Norman North. He said it was tough to make his final phone calls to Kansas’ Bill Self and Oklahoma State’s Brad Underwood, and that he made his decision a couple of days ago.
“With (the Sooners) being young, I feel like I can come in … and they can help me as much as I can help them,” Young said. “Coach (Lon) Kruger, I love the excitement. He’s passionate for the game. I can’t wait to start working with him.”
Young is ranked the No. 21 player in the 2017 class and No. 3 point guard. He received 25 offers from powers like Kentucky, Duke, UCLA, Baylor and Florida. Young is a score-first point guard who also sees the floor well. His high school highlights mainly feature him scoring from every area on the court, but when the competition level is up a notch on the summer circuit, he distributes often and gets his teammates involved.
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound McDonald’s All-American poured in career-high 65 points last Friday night – 40 in the first half – to pass the 2,500-point mark for his high school career. That performance came four days after scoring 44 points in front of Self, who watched Young in person for the final time.
Living in Norman allowed Young to visit the Sooners unofficially multiple times as Kruger pursued the talented point guard in his own backyard. Young said staying home with his family was a factor in the decision.
“My whole family is excited,” Young said. “They’re going to be able to spend every moment with me.”
