Four-star running back Toneil Carter decommitted from Georgia on Monday morning, and now a Big 12 power could be leading for his final commitment.
A few days after adding 4-star offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson to their 2017 recruiting class, Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs are now down by a 4-star prospect.
Toneil Carter Jr., the No. 9 running back and No. 102 overall player in the country, decommitted from Georgia on Monday morning.
The Houston, Texas native originally gave the Bulldogs his pledge on July 10, but there have been two key developments recently. With the decisions by running backs Sony Michel and Nick Chubb to return for one more year in Athens, Carter’s hand was forced. He cited as much in a statement he released regarding his decommitment.
“First and foremost, I just want to thank my lord and savior for giving me this opportunity to be able to have the chance to experience this great journey that I’m about to pursue. But fo the past week, I’ve been in contact with the Georgia coaches and, due to the two seniors staying, something came up with the early enrollment process, as you guys could see. So, at this moment, I would like to thank the Georgia coaches and the entire Georgia program. I will be decommitting from the university. I want to thank each and every fan. I love you guys. This was totally out of my control.”
With Georgia out of the way, the table is now set for Texas to land Carter’s commitment. The Longhorns don’t have a running back in their 2017 class, and there is a spot on the roster now that D’Onta Foreman has declared for the 2017 NFL Draft.
Texas is also pursuing 4-star running back Eno Benjamin, so there is a chance both he and Carter end up in Austin, as Tom Herman’s team has only seven total commits at the moment.
In terms of Georgia’s recruiting class, the Bulldogs have dropped one spot from No. 2 to No. 3 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings. Oklahoma replaces them and sits right behind No. 1-ranked Alabama.
