February 23, 2017Tom Herman was fired from Subway back in the day. Kind of hard to believe considering he’s a multi-millionaire coaching one of college football’s most prestigious programs now.
Let this be a lesson to the youngins out there wading through bottom-of-the-rung hourly jobs: everyone has to start somewhere in their work life.
See: Texas head coach Tom Herman and his former Subway gig.
Many years ago, Herman was, what he likes to say, a “subcontractor”; slinging $5 footlongs – those weren’t a thing back then, but let’s go with it – to hungry folks looking for a bite to eat.
“When people said, ‘Hey, what do you do?’ I would say, ‘I’m a Subcontractor. Or Submarine contractor,” Herman told Brad Townsend of SportsDay of The Dallas Morning News.
The only problem? Herman liked to eat Subway just as much as the customers he was serving. That resulted in an early termination from his employer.
“I used to love the pastrami. They had those big walk-in refrigerators. I was standing in there one day, with the door shut, just throwing pastrami in my mouth.
“It was like something out of a movie. I’ve got this bin of meat, throwing meat in my mouth, the door swings open and it’s the owner.
“He goes, ‘Get out. Don’t come back.'”
Considering he’s a multi-millionaire coach leading one of college football’s most prestigious and powerful programs, you’d probably never paint Herman for a guy who has been fired from a job. But that just goes to show that no matter what path a person starts out on, the sky is truly the limit.
