Tom Herman is reportedly close to a deal to become the LSU Tigers’ next head coach.

With Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher choosing to stay in Tallahassee, LSU is reportedly targeting Houston’s Tom Herman as its next head football coach.

The Tigers are close to a deal with Herman, according to reports from ESPN and Scout’s Horns Digest.

Chris Low of ESPN states that LSU and Herman could have a deal by Saturday, which would align with previous reports that the Tigers were trying to expedite the coaching search process in hopes to have a new coach in place this upcoming weekend.

Herman is 22-3 overall as a head coach, and has recorded notable wins over Louisville (twice), Florida State and Oklahoma in his two seasons at Houston. The Cougars went 13-1 last year and are 9-2 on this season so far.

Prior to taking over Houston, Herman coached under Urban Meyer at Ohio State as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2012-14.

LSU officials met with Herman on Thursday.

“There was a group meet with Herman today in Houston,” a Tiger Athletic Foundation member told USA Today. “This is moving in Herman’s direction.”

LSU is not the only school reportedly targeting Herman. Texas, who still has a head coach in Charlie Strong, is also supposedly interested in landing him.

Following reports that LSU and Herman were close to a deal, Football Scoop informed that Texas officials were en route to meet with Herman’s representatives.

Ross Dellenger of The Advocate has confirmed that LSU has no deal in place with Herman or any other coach as of Thursday night.
