Texas Tech vs. West Virginia prediction roundtable with the Campus Insiders staff. Breaking down what will happen in the game between the Red Raiders and Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers will be leaning on running backs Rushel Shell and Justin Crawford to be productive on the ground against the Texas Tech front so that the sustained drives can keep Red Raiders signal-caller Patrick Mahomes on the sideline. Last year, Shell ran for 111 yards and two scores as the Mountaineers piled up 300 yards on the ground against Tech. That game plan will work for one half, but Kliff Kingsbury and his staff will shut down the rushing attack in the second half, and Red Raiders wide receiver Jonathan Giles will go off as Mahomes and Co. take care of business at home.

What’s the over/under for this one? Is it 3,000? How about infinity? In reality it is 84, and I won’t be betting the under. West Virginia is a slight favorite and I’m going to stick with the road team here. Mountaineers by a field goal. Wait, no one is kicking a field goal in this game. Mountaineers by a touchdown. There.

What the hey, let’s go with the home team and the upset. West Virginia scores 87 points; Texas Tech puts up 90. It’s a thriller down in Lubbock that murders the over.

Texas Tech and defense go together like Kilff Kingsbury and a shirt — oh, wait … well, this is awkward. The point is the Red Raiders won’t stop Skyler Howard. He’ll throw for 200 yards and a couple of touchdowns, and West Virginia will get some help in the running game from Justin Crawford and Rushel Shell to come out with a win.

Kliff Kingsbury is not a good coach. There, I said it. He’d be much better served coaching a high school team in West Texas that only passes the ball, goes for it on every fourth down and has a stupid motto such as “Our Town, Our Game” or something to that effect. West Virginia wins, and couches burn for no other reason than the fact it is Morgantown.
