Texas football recruiting update for the week of March 18, 2016.

Charlie Strong’s Longhorns didn’t have a momentous week on the recruiting trail, but they didn’t exactly lose steam either.

Texas extended an offer to Montrell Estell, a 3-star athlete from Hooks, Texas.

At 6-foot-2, 180 lbs Estell projects as a safety at the next level, though he’ll still have to pack on about 10 lbs to 15 lbs when he does get to the collegiate level.

Estell doesn’t have top-notch speed, but he makes up for it with vision and a nose for the open field. Above all else, he does a good job of undercutting over-the-middle routes, and he has a knack for winding up with the ball on defense. He doesn’t just make plays on the football, he reels it in and looks for the sideline — before he eventually cuts back into a clearer lane.

Three of Texas’ five safeties on its spring roster are upperclassmen, so there’s a real need for depth at the position. Texas will have to battle rival Texas A&M for Estell’s commitment, though.

Moving forward, the Longhorns should look to add some receivers to go along with quarterback commit Sam Ehlinger. Texas already has a commitment from 4-star receiver Damion Miller, but more than half of the team’s receivers are upperclassmen.

Four-star prospect Omar Manning, the No. 10 wide receiver and No. 80 overall recruit in 2017, received an offer from the Longhorns about three weeks ago, but Strong will have to beat out TCU and Texas A&M in that race.

Below is a breakdown of Texas’ 2017 recruiting class as it currently stands.
