The game isn’t for anything other than bragging rights, but at the moment, those means something. For Vanderbilt (4-7) a win means the needle is pointing up for what could be a huge boost going into the offseason, while for Tennessee (7-4), a loss would be a disastrous end to a disappointing regular season. Why You Need To Care

At the very least, Vanderbilt has been interesting. Bad, but interesting. The Commodores have no offensive whatsoever, but the defense has been terrific enough to keep them in games. The wins haven’t come, with last week’s loss to Texas A&M ending any bowl shot, but a win over Tennessee would mean a solid five-win season and a boatload of excitement going into next year.

Tennessee has probably been better than you think. It hasn’t been the breakthrough team to dominate the East, but its four losses came to Oklahoma, Florida, Arkansas and Alabama with each game winnable. As rough as the year might have been at times, it eased up over the second half of the season with four straight wins, and now the Vols could close out strong before going off to a good bowl.

    Why Vanderbilt Will Win

It’s not like the Tennessee offense is dominating. Vanderbilt isn’t going to hang a half-a-hundred on the board, so it’s going to need to keep the game low-scoring and close. Not a problem. Tennessee’s attack exploded on Kentucky, but for the most part the passing game has been just okay, and the running game fits into what the Commodores can stop. If the Vols want to try powering the ball with Jalen Hurd, or getting wide with QB Joshua Dobbs, great – Vand has allowed more than 152 yards just twice on the year.

    Why Tennessee Will Win

It seems like a broken record every week, but really, Vanderbilt has a hard time scoring. There’s absolutely no passing game, there are too many mistakes, and averaging 14 points a game, the O is dead last in all of college football. Here’s how crazy it’s been. The Commodores are 3-0 when scoring 17 points or more, 1-7 when scoring fewer. The Vol defense hasn’t been dominant, but it’s allowed eight points total in the last two games and seems to feast off of teams that can’t move the chains. Vandy’s points come off of field position – there won’t be any long drives.

    Player Who Matters

Johnny McCrary threw just six touchdown passes with 12 interceptions for the Commodores, and he just wasn’t improving. Nothing was working for the Vandy offense, so it was time to make a switch just to see if there might be something in place to build on for the offseason.

Enter freshman Kyle Shurmur, a 6-4, 226-pound bomber from Philadelphia with a great arm, excellent size and the looks of a 12-year-old. He’s a pro-style passer who stepped in against Kentucky and completed 13-of-26 passes for 166 yards and two scores in the win, and then built off it by … clunking. He only hit 3-of-12 passes for 19 yards with a pick against Texas A&M, but he’s going to get even more of an opportunity now. If he pulls out the win, he’ll be the reason for excitement going forward.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Tennessee really is that good. Vanderbilt’s defense will do what Vanderbilt’s defense does, but the offense won’t have enough wow moments to overcome a decent day from Josh Dobbs and the Tennessee attack. There won’t be many long drives from the Vols, but they’ll take advantage of good field position three times for scores.
