    Why You Need To Care

It’s Gary Pinkel’s final home game as the Missouri head football coach, but did the emotion of everything that happened over the last few weeks come through on the field against BYU in the 20-16 win? The offense is still struggling, but the defense is picking up the slack – at least it did last week. To give Pinkel one extra game as the head coach it either needs to win this week or six days later against Arkansas – this is where the Tigers have to get it done.

Tennessee has had a bumpy ride overall this year, but the four losses came to Oklahoma in double overtime, at Florida, at Alabama, and at home in a fight with Arkansas – that’s not bad. The Vols haven’t been consistent, and they haven’t been as good as everyone was hoping for, but all four of their losses were close, and the talent is there to finish with a huge kick. If they play their best game, and Missouri plays its best game, they’ll win big.

    Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee’s defense is doing an outstanding job of getting off the field. The Vols are allowing teams to convert just 28% of their third down chances and have been absolutely dominant over the last three games. Kentucky, South Carolina and North Texas combined to convert just 10-of-42 opportunities halting drive after drive. Mizzou beat BYU by doing a wonderful job at controlling the game – converting 13-of-20 chances. That’s not going to happen again.

    Why Missouri Will Win

Gary Pinkel. Emotion can only go so far, and the whole “Win One For The Coach” thing lasts only a little bit, but it was a slightly different team last week against BYU. The run defense was fantastic, and the intensity was there, but for the first time in a long time the offense actually worked a little bit. It wasn’t Baylor, and it didn’t do anything special, but it looked and played like a decent team again. The intensity should be off the charts for Pinkel’s final home game.

    Player Who Matters

Russell Hansbrough was front and center in the Missouri players’ strike, and the Tiger running back came out like a different player once the team got back on the field against BYU. Held to under 75 yards in every game this year, he finally got the workload and he made the most of it cranking out 117 yards on 26 carries. More importantly, QB Drew Lock picked a great time to come up with the best game of his young career, completing 19-of-28 passes for 244 yards and a score with a pick. He’ll have to be at least that good again.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Tennessee is the far better team. The return game is among the best in college football, while Mizzou’s is among the worst. Tennessee is among the best teams in the country when it comes to third down conversions and stopping third down plays – Mizzou is lousy at both. Tennessee has a good offense, Mizzou has a bad one. Tennessee has scored 20 points or more in every game but the loss to Alabama, Mizzou has scored 20 points or fewer in seven of the last eight games. Tennessee is more talented, tighter, and stronger.
