Tennessee offensive coordinator Mike DeBord has decided to leave the Volunteers to take the same position at Indiana under new head coach Tom Allen.

A new quarterback will start for the Tennessee Volunteers next season after three-plus years of mainstay Joshua Dobbs under center. That quarterback will also be playing under a new offensive coordinator, as current coordinator Mike DeBord is leaving Knoxville after two seasons to take the same position at Indiana, as first reported by Austin Price of Rivals.

This is one more step on what has been a rocky calendar year for head coach Butch Jones and the Volunteers, as preseason expectations went unfulfilled and several player departures, along with key injuries, resulted in a 9-4 record.

The Volunteers finished No. 40 in total offense this season, averaging 443.7 yards per game while putting up 36.4 points per outing, good for No. 24 in FBS. It was an improvement over Tennessee’s productivity in DeBord’s first season, where the Volunteers averaged just 422.3 and 35.2 in 2015.

DeBord will take over a Hoosier offense that was near the bottom in points per game this past season, averaging just 25.8 per game, and will be working under new head coach Tom Allen, who was promoted from defensive coordinator after the resignation of Kevin Wilson.

For Tennessee, Jones will need to find a new offensive coordinator to help mentor a new quarterback and develop the talent of running back John Kelly. One name that has been mentioned is former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich, who would bring an up-tempo, no-huddle offense to the Volunteers.
