February 1, 2017Five-star offensive guard Tedarrell Slaton committed to the Florida Gators, as Jim McElwain was able to lure the nation’s No. 32 overall player to Gainesville.
For the first time since the 2015 cycle when they signed Martez Ivey and CeCe Jefferson, the Gators have landed a 5-star prospect.
Tedarrell Slaton, the No. 2 offensive guard and No. 32 overall player in the country, committed to Florida on National Signing Day.
At 6-foot-5 and 341 lbs, Slaton is stronger than the majority of offensive and defensive linemen in the 2017 recruiting class. He’s a nasty run blocker with an aggressive mentality. He will get his hands inside on a defensive lineman and dictate his every move, virtually controlling him from the snap to the whistle.
He has the ability to play inside at guard but can also slide out and play offensive tackle as well. However, there is a chance Slaton doesn’t end up playing on the offensive line for Florida.
For weeks now, the idea has been floated that Slaton would want to play defensive tackle for whichever school he ended up with. The Gators so happened to be in need of defensive tackles, and it looks as though it will work out for both parties.
If Slaton does make the switch to the other side of the ball, he’ll still find a way to get early reps. He explodes off the ball and keeps his numbers to the sky with a low pad level in order to gain leverage, which he then turns into backfield penetration.
Regardless of which side of the ball he ends up on, Slaton will be an impact player for Jim McElwain’s team.
