Four-star quarterback Tanner McKee spoke with Campus Insiders regarding his looming commitment and the mutual interest between him and Tom Herman's Texas Longhorns.
March 13, 2017Four-star quarterback Tanner McKee spoke with Campus Insiders regarding his looming commitment and the mutual interest between him and Tom Herman’s Texas Longhorns.
The Lone Star State has produced a large number of top-tier quarterbacks over the years.
Lately, many of the country’s top passers have been coming from the West Coast, giving it the “Quarterback Heaven” nickname. One of the 2018 class’ top quarterback prospects happens to be Tanner McKee, from Corona, California.
Naturally, home-state teams like UCLA and USC are on his radar, but the nation’s No. 17 quarterback and No. 178 overall player is also drawing the attention from powerhouse programs in other conferences — specifically the Texas Longhorns.
Tom Herman’s staff offered the 6-foot-6, 220-pound quarterback last week, and McKee spoke with Campus Insiders regarding Texas’ chances in his recruitment.
“There is definitely [mutual] interest,” he said. “I’ve talked with [quarterbacks] Coach [Tim] Beck a lot, and I like Coach Herman’s style. Texas is a great program.”
Leaving the sunshine in southern California for Austin, Texas would be a big move, though. One that could be daunting for many teenagers, especially when posed the challenge of playing quarterback for one of the country’s most prestigious football programs.
But it’s a move McKee would be willing to make, considering he’s spent time there before.
“I can see myself wherever the best fit is. My aunt lived in Dallas for 15 years. I actually like it down there,” he said.
With the vision of playing for Herman and the Longhorns materializing in his head, and with an offer on the table, the next step for McKee is to make the trip to Austin and get an up-close look at the campus.
“Coach Herman likes to sling the ball. He did it at Houston. I like that. After my visit, I guess I’ll have a better idea of how I would fit in,” McKee said.
He’s planning on making that unofficial visit on May 6, though even if the visit goes perfectly, a college commitment could still be well into the future.
“[I’ll be] seeing what they have to offer academically and how I fit in with the coaches and the system,” McKee said. “[There’s] no timeline on committing for now. [I’m] going to see how the spring and summer go. I don’t want to rush into a decision.”
He’ll most likely reveal his top schools list this summer, and the Longhorns are in a great position to make the cut. But even if they land McKee’s pledge, he’ll still have some bodies in front of him.
Shane Buechele showed a lot of promise this past season a true freshman, and Sam Ehlinger will likely position himself as the one next in line for the starting job once Buechele moves on.
Still, McKee’s vision of playing in a Texas uniform isn’t clouded by a crowded depth chart. He would look forward to competing with both Buechele and Ehlinger every day if he were to end up in Austin.
