    Why You Need To Care

Bo Ryan’s Badgers just have not been able to maintain any kind of consistent success so far this season. After dropping the first game of the season to Western Illinois, they’ve found a not-so-pleasant pattern — win two, lose one. It’s gotten them to a 4-3 record.

Wisconsin faced the Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday and it didn’t turn out well for the Badgers. They lost in Norman, Okla., 65-48.

Syracuse has seen its season begin much differently, picking up a couple quality wins against UConn and Texas A&M along the way to a 6-0 record.

Jim Boeheim’s classic zone defense is yielding just 63.5 points per game and allowing opponents to hit on just 36.9 percent of their shots from the field.

It’s another Big Ten/ACC Challenge game, and it’s poised to be a good one.

    Why Syracuse Will Win

As it was said before, Boeheim’s zone defense approach is going to be what helps Syracuse the most in this one. The Badgers are shooting a mediocre 30.4 percent from three on the season. How can a team beat a zone defense? Perimeter scoring. Both teams rebound at a similar rate, so if and when Wisconsin misses those threes, Syracuse needs to box out and secure the basketball.

    Why Wisconsin Will Win

Let’s just say it now: the Badgers need someone to hit from the outside. It’s the only way to keep Syracuse honest on defense. The Badgers have committed just 68 turnovers compared to the 84 they’ve forced. They’ll need to pressure Syracuse’s backcourt and pick up easy buckets in transition. Wisconsin also needs to push the Orange off the three-point line. Boeheim’s guys are knocking down 41.1 percent of their shots from deep, so the Badgers will have to close out and force Syracuse to hit contested jump shots.

    Players Who Matter

The Orange need Michael Gbinije to come up big in this one. The junior forward is scoring 19.7 points per game, but it’s more about how he’s been scoring them. Gbinije is shooting 52.9 percent from the field overall and 51.3 percent from three-point range. Tyler Lydon and Tyler Roberson will have to do the nitty gritty work on the boards, and it won’t hurt if they add a few points, too.

Wisconsin is in need of a hero, but neither Frank Kaminsky nor Sam Dekker are going to be walking off of that team bus. So, it has to be Bronson Koenig. The junior guard is averaging 16.1 points per game on 43.5 percent shooting, but he needs to do a little more than just score. Nigel Hayes will also have a lot of eyes on him. He’s been dropping 14.9 points per contest, but like Koenig, Hayes needs to have an all-around game to get this one done for the Badgers.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Wisconsin just doesn’t shoot the three ball well enough to get Syracuse out of a rhythm defensively. If the Badgers miss one, two, even three perimeter jump shots in a row, it could lead to a big-time run for the Orange. That’s how this is going to go down. Syracuse will use its defense to create offense, and Gbinije will have a great game, leading all scorers in it.
