    Why You Need To Care

Oh where, oh where has the head coach gone? Okay, that was a little lame, but it’s still not as bad as Syracuse (6-2) starting Jim Boeheim’s nine-game suspension with a loss to rival Georgetown.

The Hoyas took care of the Orange 79-72 on Saturday, and it certainly wasn’t the way the suspended coach hoped his team would respond to losing in overtime to Wisconsin last Wednesday.

Colgate has seen a little rougher time than Syracuse has this season. The Raiders are 2-5, but one thing they have in common is a two-game losing streak. Colgate enters this one having lost back-to-back games to Binghamton and Texas Christian.

All gut feelings should indicate an Orange win, but let’s dive more into it.

    Why Syracuse Will Win

Michael Gbinije has been a stud for Syracuse so far this season, having broken the 20-point mark four times already. Surprisingly, though, the Orange are only 5-3 all-time when Gbinije scores at least 20 points and 5-1 when he gets at least six assists. Gbinije will need to create for others in this one — especially against Colgate, who gives up 76.3 points per game anyway. Syracuse should look to Malachi Richardson and Trevor Cooney for the bulk of the scoring. And on defense, just let the zone do its work — forcing the Raiders to miss threes that turn into transition points for the Orange.

    Why Colgate Will Win

Well, let’s see … first, someone has to step up and accept the challenge of slowing down Gbinije, who’s averaging 20 points on 50 percent shooting. Will that be Jordan Swopshire? Will it be Tom Rivard? Someone has to dedicate 30-plus minutes to only guarding Syracuse’s star player. Aside from that, the only way to beat the Orange’s zone is to knock down threes. Swopshire lead the team with 38.1 percent shooting behind the arc. If Rivard is going to exhaust his energy, then Swopshire needs to make it count by coming up big from deep.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Boeheim can kick back for this one. Syracuse will handle Colgate on its home court. Gbinije will surely take what he wants scoring wise, but he’ll do a little bit of everything in this one. That doesn’t mean he’ll go for a triple-double, but he’ll certainly make his presence felt. Swopshire and Rivard won’t be able to stop him, and the Raiders won’t shoot high enough of a percentage from three to beat the zone. The Orange win this one by double digits.
