All things considered, it’s hard not to be a little impressed by Miami’s 8-4 finish

No, the Canes aren’t back, whatever that might mean in this current era of football in Coral Gables. And yes, there were two hideous losses to ACC divisional winners Carolina and Clemson, the latter of which preceded the ouster of fifth-year head coach Al Golden. But Miami has impressively salvaged its season, thanks to the work of Larry Scott, who went 4-1 as the interim coach. Instead of packing it in, the kids rallied, so focus and motivation don’t figure to be concerns in the upcoming bowl game.

Washington State came out of nowhere to be this year’s biggest surprise in the Pac-12

In a season when so many league schools disappointed, the Cougars were a refreshing exception, finishing in third place in the North Division and with its most wins since 2003. And while QB Luke Falk was the star of the resurgence, even generating some Heisman talk, the defense was a revelation under first-year coordinator Alex Grinch. Wazzu was especially good outside the Palouse, winning at Rutgers, Oregon, Arizona and UCLA before Falk was scratched for the Apple Cup in Seattle. Instead of resting on its laurels, Mike Leach wants his team to use this rare bowl trip to further advertise just how well it played in 2015.
