10-2
This might have been a terrific bounceback season after sliding into the bowl season last year with a bit of a miracle, but the finishing kick was a thud. The Cowboys had everything right there for the taking with the three big games all at home, and they blew it with losses to Baylor and Oklahoma ruining the chance at getting into the playoff. Even so, this has been a fun passing team, the pass rush has been excellent, and this has turned out to be an entertaining season. But now it’s time to actually come up with something really big. The 49-29 win over TCU was a big moment, but the two losses to finish things off glossed that over. 11-2, though, would make this a special year no matter what.
This was Example No. 1 of the SEC West’s problems during last year’s bowl season. The last time we saw Ole Miss in a New Year’s Six bowl game it got ripped to shreds by an ultra-motivated TCU team 42-3 in last year’s Cotton Bowl. This time around, the Rebels enter the bowl season as the league’s No. 2 team – it needs to play like it. The offensive pop is there, the defensive talent is phenomenal, and an overtime loss away from taking the West and likely the conference, this is a really, really good team. It’s really, really, flaky in terms of its consistency, but it’s that good. It’s also going to be that motivated.
