Steve Spurrier will be honored at Tennessee’s spring game … yes you read that right.
Here’s a fun story that could easily be posted in the subreddit r/NotTheOnion. Steve Spurrier will be presented with the Robert Neyland Award, given by the Knoxville Quarterback Club, and will be honored at the Volunteers’ spring football game.
Step back and process that for a moment.
This is a man who made his nut off of embarrassing the Volunteers. Yes, Tennessee romped the HBC on the way to a title in 1997, and they prevented, arguably, the best Spurrier-led team from even reaching the SEC Championship Game in 2001 (also serving him an L in his final home game as Florida’s head coach).
“Steve Spurrier, who beat Tennessee with three different schools at Neyland Stadium, will receive the award given in honor of the stadium’s namesake.”
To be fair, the Neyland Trophy is an annaul award for an “outstanding man who has contributed greatly to intercollegiate athletics.” Spurrier is joining a long list that includes both friends – Johnny Majors, Phillip Fulmer, Doug Dickey, et al. – and enemies – Bear Bryant, Gene Stallings, Vince Dooley, et al. – of the Volunteers. It is a non-discriminatory award.
But still, we’re talking about Stephen Orr Spurrier being honored for an award at one of Tennessee football’s cornerstone events. The only ovation he should receive is a Bronx cheer. It would definitely be the well-earned sendoff of a professional gadfly – one who would certainly appreciate a wave of boos more than any scattered applause. Though God help the crowd if somebody puts a mic in his hands.
