Steve Spurrier discusses the moment he realized his coaching days were over.
January 11, 2016Love him or hate him, you have to respect Steve Spurrier for his honesty. Throughout his coaching career, which will go down as one of the greatest in college football history, Spurrier always spoke his mind.
Unfortunately, because of his retirement, we won’t be treated to his thoughts on a regular basis anymore, but that doesn’t mean Spurrier won’t steal the show whenever he does hop behind a mic.
On Monday, while addressing the crowd at the American Football Coaches Association convention, Spurrier discussed the moment he realized his coaching days were over.
“At halftime against UCF, I looked in the mirror and thought, ‘I can’t coach anymore,'” Spurrier said.
Spurrier abruptly retired as South Carolina’s head coach on Oct. 12.
His intentions were to provide South Carolina with enough time to fully plan for the future of the football program.
Spurrier posted an 86-49 overall record with the Gamecocks, a program that has experienced limited success in its history. He led South Carolina to seven straight bowl berths from 2008-14 and three straight 11-2 finishes from 2011-13.
Spurrier also left the convention with one quintessential quote from the man known as the Head Ball Coach.
“Thank God preachers get horny on Sundays,” he said in regards to being born.
Never change, Spurrier.
