Report: Steve Spurrier Jr. In Running For Florida Coaching Position

Steve Spurrier Jr. is in the running for a Florida coaching position, according to a report on Wednesday.

    February 25, 2016

Steve Spurrier Jr. is being considered by Jim McElwain for a Florida coaching vacancy.

When it comes to college football, there are certain names eternally linked to respective programs. In spite of other variables, you just can’t help but think of one when you think of the other.

Paul “Bear” Bryant drums up ideas of when the Tide started to roll. Bobby Bowden will forever be tied to Florida State, and Joe Paterno is the essence of Penn State.

The same holds true for the University of Florida. When you think Gators, your mind wanders to “Fun ‘n’ Gun,” and then it leads you to Steve Spurrier.

The former Gators head coach, who revolutionized the college football passing game and helped mold the modern Southeastern Conference, may have retired with the South Carolina Gamecocks, but he’ll forever be remembered in orange and blue.

The Spurrier-Florida legacy may be getting a new chapter very soon. Steve Spurrier Jr. is a candidate for a vacant position as a Gators offensive quality control assistant, according to Gridiron Now.

Jim McElwain believes Spurrier Jr. may be a fitting replacement for Marquel Blackwell, who left to join Toledo’s coaching staff as the running backs coach.

Should he get the job, Spurrier Jr. would help offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier keep the momentum going from last year’s 10-4 season.

With Will Grier gone, Treon Harris taking reps at wide receiver and two incoming freshmen (Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask) joining a pair of transfers (Luke Del Rio and Austin Appleby), Florida’s quarterback position will need some work.

Could it be a better fit? When you think Gators passing game, you think Spurrier.
