The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.

    Resume

    Team: Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks

    Record:
    27-5

    Conference:
    Southland Conference

    Head coach:
    Brad Underwood

    How they got here:
     Won conference tournament

    The Good

Stephen F. Austin is back in the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season, and this is a roster that is a blend of experienced seniors and talented freshmen. Forward Thomas Walkup is the leader of this group, an undersized forward who does his best work inside and shoots a tick below 60 percent from the field. He also is the best passer and rebounder on the roster, and he gets help from senior Demetrius Floyd and freshman Clide Geffard Jr. Floyd is the perimeter sharpshooter while Geffard is the slasher who gets to the free-throw line.

    The Bad

Did we mention that the team’s leading rebounder is 6-foot-4? Walkup is a stud, but this team’s lack of length is a huge issue. It’s fine in the Southland Conference, but in the NCAA Tournament, it’s tough to win when you aren’t playing on a level field. That lack of size keeps SFA from protecting the rim when mistakes are made on the perimeter.

    Prediction

The Lumberjacks are explosive offensively, and few teams share the ball as well as SFA. The experience on this squad is going to make them a tough out, and this squad has all the makings of a team that could win a game or even two in the Big Dance.
