Texas A&M’s talented wide receiver Speedy Noil was arrested on Friday. What does it mean for the Aggies?

If your name is Speedy Noil, you should be allowed to speed.

But you’re not allowed to drive a car without a license, which is the new problem for Noil after being arrested on Friday. It’s just the latest problem for a guy who’s supposed to be the Next Big Thing wide receiver, and just isn’t. So what does it all mean for Texas A&M – and for Noil?

He’s been okay, but considering he was a top recruit with decent size, great hands, and – of course – great wheels, it hasn’t come together.

Part of the problem has been the lack of consistent quarterback play, and Christian Kirk and Josh Reynolds have stepped up as the stars for the passing attack, but Noil has had his moments, coming up with 11 catches for 105 yards against Ole Miss in 2014 and doing a decent job overall on kick and punt returns.

Overall, though, he hasn’t found his groove as a receiver, catching 21 passes for 226 yards and two scores as a sophomore after making 46 grabs for 583 yards and five scores as a true freshman.

Off-the-field problems are turning into the bigger issue, getting suspended for an early game last season, and then for the bowl game against Louisville, and now is supposed to miss the opener against UCLA this season for the dreaded “violation of team rules.” Throw this latest incident on the pile of problems, and Noil needs a reboot.

He’s got the talent, and he’s got the skills, but considering all the pressure on A&M and head coach Kevin Sumlin, does this mean the Aggies are going to lose a guy who might just need a bit more focus before it all blows up?

With or without Noil, the Aggies are loaded at receiver with Kirk, Reynolds, Ricky Seals-Jones and Damion Ratley forming the corps of one of the nation’s best sets of receivers. Having Noil around on the field is a big deal – he adds even more talent to the mix.
