March 14, 2016The Southern Jaguars have made it to the NCAA Tournament. Here’s a preview of the team and a prediction of how they’ll do during March Madness.
Team: Southern Jaguars
Record: 22-12
Conference: SWAC
Head coach: Roman Banks
How they got here: Won conference tournament
The Jaguars return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013, and they did it by raiding Adrian Rodgers. Rodgers averages 16.9 points and 5.2 rebounds, and he’s the kind of senior guard who can take over games with his strength and quickness. Christopher Hyder is the team’s catalyst on offense and defense, a point guard with quick hands who sets up his teammates and shuts down opposing backcourts. Trelun Banks and Jared Sam provide support.
Southern can sputter offensively at times, and this is a team that can get a bit careless with the ball. The Jags have nice balance in the lineup, but a lack of size and depth are both Achilles heels that are going to hurt badly in the NCAA Tournament.
This is an untested team that simply doesn’t have the talent of a lot of other teams in the Big Dance. The Jaguars are going to put up a fight for a half, but this is a team that went 4-4 in its last eight games vs. SWAC opponents, and Southern simply looks like it has run out of gas.
